Finished Basement
Today a complete set of home remodeling ideas will
include a finished basement. It is often the most
cost efficient part of remodeling a home. That is,
you get the greatest number of usable square
footage for the dollars spent. The living space of a
house may be increased by one-third or even
doubled. The basement floor plan will need to be
customized to accommodate the furnace and AC
unit if they are not easily relocated. The purpose for
the new space needs to be clearly defined before
starting to finish the basement.

Once the purpose has been decided you can start
developing your plans and home remodeling ideas.
Think far ahead. Consider the age of your children
and will you want to change the basement floor
plans as they grow. If you have plans to change the
layout of the first floor consider how the basement
will compliment these future home remodeling
ideas. You may want to install easily removable
walls so when the kids move out you can have that
extra large recreation room for entertaining. Another
option may be to plan the basement layout so that it
is simple to convert into a suite that you can rent out.

There are parts of the existing structure that is not
easily altered. Remember, the originally the main
purpose for the basement was, and still is, in the
builders mind to support the house and be
somewhere to put the furnace, hot water tank and
the electrical panel. There are most likely posts and
beams that you will need to incorporate into your
basement floor plans. There are home remodeling
ideas that disguise these features as part of the
decor. Now in many cases it is possible to eliminate
or at least move some of these posts and beams,
however the cost probably inhibitive. Do not try this
project yourself unless you are a construction
contractor. Even the average fix-it contractor should
stay clear of such major structural alterations as
jacking up the house and relocating the support
beams. Maybe you best just work around them.
