Do It Yourself Wine Cellars
Is a wine cellar part of your basement design ideas?
If the basement area is on a concrete slab, the floor
must be as level as possible and the concrete floor
must be treated with waterproof sealer. If concrete
walls are bare liner walls need to be constructed of
2x4 or 2x6 studs. Take care that the corners are
squared. These walls will need 2x6 nailer boards
between studs, below top plate and above sill plate
to anchor racking. If using plywood sheeting, this
step not needed. Do not place any electrical outlets
or switches where racks are to be installed. Now
1/2" plywood sheeting will be attached to all walls
after electrical rough in and insulation. This is to
anchor racking. With this step the use of nailer
boards between studs will not needed. All of this
can be done as a do it yourself project.

Plan the location of your cooling unit. You can get
all the measurements and mounting details from the
supplier before you take delivery. At this location
you will need to further reinforce the wall with nailer
boards. Get this framed in before starting you dry
walling. Mount all the light connection boxes,
ensuring that they are mounted far enough away
from the walls. Keep in mind your do it yourself
basement design ideas.

Install moisture resistant drywall like you would use
in a bathroom. Drywall (sheetrock) must be installed
a maximum 1/8" above sub-flooring. Drywall is to be
finished and painted using exterior primer and paint,
leaving no unfinished areas like areas you would
normally leave unpainted where baseboards would
have been placed. Remember, this may be a do it
yourself project, do not cheat, do it right.

Wine cellar kits for the basement are affordably
priced. Most companies have components range
from simple building blocks, which can grow with
your collection, to modular systems, which are
custom in appearance. Either way you can have a
professional looking cellar in your basement.
Expand your basement design ideas and you can
include the wine cellar and do it yourself.
