Dealing with Basement Mold
|
Basement mold can easily grow into the floors and
walls of the house above. The basement mold can
spread airborne mold spores in air currents to mold
contaminate your entire house through its
heating/cooling equipment and ducts. Wetness in
the basement is the cause of basement mold so
waterproofing is step one in mold prevention.
Concrete waterproofing is a must do step in mold
prevention. The goal is a dry basement so a
basement dehumidifier is good idea. The building
products used in your basement require some extra
thought. For example do not use carpet in the
basement unless as a throw rug that can be easily
removed for cleaning.
Concrete waterproofing is always a prime concern
with basements. A basement dehumidifier can only
do so much, they are not meant to handle a leaky
basement. Basement mold will grow on wood,
drywall, carpet or almost anything that was wet.
Prevention is the ideal but if basement mold does
show up, there are special mold cleaning products.
Some of these products are made from natural
mold killers. You can do your own mold repairs on
your home. Make sure to wear a mask to guard
against mold spore inhalation and rubber gloves
against the chemicals when mold cleaning.
However if the basement mold is well established
and you are unsure, you may be well advised to
hire a professional to remove the mold.
Basement mold is one of the things that you may
miss when viewing a house that you are thinking of
purchasing. Take the time to see if there are any
signs of poor concrete waterproofing. There might
be water stains where the basement walls meet the
floor or a musty smell. Of course if you are using a
certified home inspector, as you should, they will be
checking for basement mold and proper basement
waterproofing. If the moisture is minor and not from
a leaky basement, a basement dehumidifier and
insulation will be a must.
