Basement Heating
Basement heating can be a major consideration
when planning the renovation project. If your home is
heated by a central heating system, you may choose
to have alterations done to the existing ducting.
Should you decide to go that way, bringing the
ducting right down close to the basement floor is
much superior to just adding ceiling vents. You will
need to plan this before insulating basement walls
and ceilings. Since heat naturally rises, the rooms
feel much warmer if the heated air starts near the
floor. Properly heating the basement is an important
step in having a dry basement.

A dry basement is much healthier because it
eliminates Mold growth and other undesirable
developments. Insulating basement walls, at least
the outer walls, greatly assist in keeping the
basement warm and dry without breaking the
budget. Because basement areas are often used
only on occasion, you might want to look at electric
baseboard heating as an option for your basement
heating. It is localized and can be controlled on a
space-by-space plan. So if you have a spare
bedroom in the basement and no one is staying in it
for a month or two, you turn the heat down to maybe
60 degrees farenhieght. Do not shut the heat right
off during the colder and damper seasons because
that would be inviting mold and mildew into your
home. You will need to have the electrical service to
your home assessed to see if it will carry the
additional load of heaters.

Insulating basement walls correctly is well worth the
time and effort. The outer concrete walls should
have a framed inner wall built alongside but not quite
touching the concrete. A small space between the
concrete and the studs and insulation is very
important to maximizing the benefit from insulating
the walls. The air space is actually acting as
insulation and stops the inner material from drawing
moisture through the concrete. Remember to seal all
cracks and fissures in the concrete before covering it
up. Also it is a good plan to have your basement
heating by the outer walls so the heat emanates
inward, the affect is much more pleasant. Be sure
that you have taken all the steps to ensure you have
a dry basement before covering the floor slab or the
concrete walls as it is very expensive to do
afterwards.
