A basement bathroom is a must if you are
remodelling. Basement bathroom plumbing requires
some extra planning. Many houses with basements
have the building drain below the basement level so
no special equipment would be required. Sometimes
you'll see a horizontal drain line at the top or halfway
up the basement wall, this means more planning to
install your basement toilet. One approach is to
install a plastic sump (basin) below the concrete
basement floor and use a sewage lift pump (also
called an ejector pump) to pump out the waste when
the sump is full. These pumps are specially
equipped with grinding devices to reduce solids.
One common concern is what if the pump ever fails,
the toilet won't drain properly, and so you'll be
alerted to the problem.
The cost for the pump with basin and check valve
will range from $300 to $500. you should ask a
couple plumbing contractors about costs for
installing a sewage ejector system. You will have to
locate where the main drain exits your house. Your
basement bathroom is one room that you may not be
able to put just anywhere. It would be helpful to have
a plan of your proposed bathroom and basement
floor plan so the plumber can get a good idea of
what you want. Basement bathroom plumbing may
take extra time and planning, but it is well worth it. A
basement toilet increases the value of your home
especially if and when you decide to sell.
You may have a plumber do the plumbing especially
since there will be concrete cutting involved.
Concrete cutting isn't that difficult, just messy, and
you will need to rent some tools for a day. I suggest
get a plumber to do the basement bathroom
plumbing, then do all the wall framing, drywall, and
finish work yourself. The basement bathroom should
be the first consideration when planning your
basement remodelling or basement finishing.
Remember, you are supposed to get a permit for this
work.
